Everyone wants to have healthy eyes and as you learn facts about eyes, you can make better decisions about what activities are good or bad for your sight. The eye has several parts and each has a very specific job which contributes to your eyesight.

The eye itself is a socket whose many structures work with light rays to give us images. The eyelid is a protective mechanism which constantly blinks to disperse any material which might land there and threaten the eye. At the same time, the eyelid spreads tears across the surface of the eye to keep it clean.

Conjunctivitis is an infection of this portion of the eye.

The back of the eye has light-sensitive tissue which is called the retina. Here is where you find the all-important macula, the central part of your vision. The many nerves here connect to the brain via the optical nerve. Both the heart and the body’s neurological system are responsible for the proper operation of the eye.

  2. Every day you blink around 10,000 times.
  3. The eye functions 24 hours a day without needing rest.
  4. Every second, your eyes focus on fifty different objects.
  5. Only the brain is more complex than the eyes.
  6. You are born color blind.
  7. You don’t produce tears until you are one to three months old.
  8. Your eye lashes are replaced by new ones every five months.
  9. Your eyes can distinguish between 500 shades of gray.
  10. The largest eye in the world is possessed by a giant squid. This eye is 18 inches wide.

There are many eye conditions and diseases which can develop. As you age, your eyes are more apt to have problems. When you are in your twenties, a person with good vision only needs to have a thorough eye exam once but by the time you reach the age of 50-60, one per year is recommended.

This is especially important if you have a disease which can damage the eyes, such as diabetes. Facts about eyes tell us most people develop presbyopia in their 40s. That’s when you need to get reading glasses because your ability to see things up close deteriorates. When you reach the age of sixty and above, you have to be aware of the symptoms of cataracts, macular degeneration and dry eye syndrome.

Nutrition and eating properly are essential for eyesight health. You can prevent many health problems by eating four to six servings of fruits and vegetables every day. If your mother told you that carrots were good for your eyesight, she was right.

There are also a variety of supplements which are beneficial to eye health. Before starting to take any supplements though, it is necessary to talk to your doctor about which ones are best for you. Some can interact badly with prescription medications. The following supplements have proven to be effective for healthy eyes: beta-carotene, vitamins C, A, E, and B complex, lutein, coenzyme 10, lipoid acid, selenium, bilberry, zinc and omega-3 fatty acids, among others.
